Fringe Season Two Premiere Misrepresents Head Trauma

In the first season finale of Fringe, we left FBI agent Olivia Dunham in an alternate dimension where she was to meet with mysterious Massive Dynamic CEO William Bell. (His offices were located in the still-standing Twin Towers and, oh yeah, JFK is still alive. So are all of the Beatles … and they’re on a reunion tour.) In the second season premiere, “A New Day in the Old Town,” we didn’t find out just what Dunham and Bell talked about—but we did get a healthy dose of medical pseudoscience. Popular Mechanics talked to Justin Sattin, an assistant professor of neurology at the School of Medicine and Public Health at the University of Wisconsin and medical director of the UW Health Comprehensive Stroke Program, to separate the fact from fiction.

Speculations, Observations & Questions 201 & 202

There are quite a few things that I haven’t mentioned yet, but that I would like to touch on before the next episode airs.  Some are theories or speculations, some are just observations and some are outright questions.

#1 – The kiss between Nina and Broyles…what was that about?  At first I thought this was a long term or new development, but after watching the scene again, I believe that is was more of a one way kiss on Nina’s part.  Broyles didn’t seem as into it as Nina did.  Is it possible that instead of an ongoing relationship that it was a prior relationship?  Perhaps they worked together at some point and built a relationship at that time, but when Nina went to work for William Bell, their relationship fell apart.  Either way, I think it might explain why Broyles has been slipping her information.  Do you think that this helps or hinders the Fringe Division?

#2 – There was another reference to Peter and Alter-Peter in 201.  Walter states that Peter loved custard as a child and Peter states that he has NEVER liked custard.

#3 – Olivia speaking Greek.  We are fairly sure that her bionic hearing is a side effect of the inter-dimensional traveling and we know from Sam Weiss that she will be getting headaches as well.  But what other side effects should she expect?  When she wakes up in the hospital and…

What I found & What I didn’t find – Easter Eggs 201

On the back of my long winded complaint about how there are very little Easter Eggs in the first two Episodes, I should take the time to review the few things I did find, and the things that have been pointed out to me by others.  Thanks to the help of other devoted fans, I have discovered that there are a lot more Easter Eggs in this episode than I thought.  I officially apologize for jumping the gun.

- The first thing I should mention is that the title sequence has changed a little this year.  Last year the list of Fringe Sciences that were written on the screen were as follows: “Psychokinesis, Teleportation, Nanotechnology, Dark Matter, Cybernetics, Suspended Animation, Artificial Intelligence, Precognition, Psychokinesis, and Transmogrification“.  This year, the Fringe Sciences that are written on the screen are as follows: “Astral Projection, Protoscience, Mutation, Hypnosis, Pyrokinesis, Hive Mind, ESP, Neurosciece, Clairaudience, Cryonics, Parallel Universes,  and Genetic Engineering“.

What about Charlie? – 202

I have some questions about our newest addition to the ‘Fringe’ team…Shape-shifter-Charlie, who I will refer to from now on as SSC.  I think his character deserves a little dissection, I mean, we do it to everyone else…right?

- Last week we saw the shape-shifter nurse get shot twice in the back and jump out of a second story window and it didn’t even phase her/him.  This leads me to believe that the shape-shifters have some super-human strength and high thresh-hold to pain…if they feel pain at all.  However, this week when SSC walks in to the typewriter store, he is holding his stomach and having trouble walking like he has been injured or is in a lot of pain.  Whatup?

At first I thought that perhaps SSC got shot at the end of Episode 202, but when I watched the scene again, there are no signs that he was injured at that point.  He seems fine, and even if he/she was injured, why would it phase him…it didn’t seem to phase the nurse.  So what I am thinking now is that perhaps there are side effects to the shape-shifting.  Maybe the longer he holds the form of somebody, the more detrimental it is to his body.  Or maybe the longer he is not in his own dimension, the harder it is on him.

Fringe is definitely in Vancouver

I was re-watching Episode 201 today…looking for the next episode clue for 202 (I will get into that later)…and I noticed the sign on the window of  the bar that Peter and Broyles meet in…’The Irish Heather’.

.

Just out of curiosity…I Googled it, and sure enough, it is a real bar located on Carrall Street in Vancouver.  Great for the owners of the pub…you couldn’t ask for better publicity.
